Biostimulators

Biostimulators are injectable substances, that stimulate the body’s natural healing process, typically by triggering the production of new collagen and other cellular components. Biostimulators are used to improve the appearance of the skin and to address signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of volume in the facial areas.

Biostimulators are typically injected into the skin or underlying tissue and work by stimulating the production of new collagen, elastin, and  hyaluronic acid. Over time, the increased production of these substances will improve the texture, tone, and elasticity of the skin, resulting in a more natural youthful appearance.

Some common biostimulators include Sculptra, Radiesse, and Ellansé.

What are Biostimulators like Sculptra made from?

Biostimulators like Sculptra, are made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is the same ingredient found in dissolvable stitches. It is biocompatible and biodegradable, which means it is gradually and naturally absorbed by your body, thus aiding in rebuilding lost collagen.

Treats:

Corrects shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles, helping to restore facial volume and fullness over time.

How does it work?

Sculptra works by stimulating the production of collagen in the skin. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and support to the skin, but its production decreases with age, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and other signs of aging.

It works with your body within the deeper layers of your skin to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume.

The micro-particles in Sculptra® are naturally absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production, which in turn helps to restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin, effectively reducing and improving facial wrinkles by rebuilding the collagen strands over time.

Unlike traditional dermal fillers, which work by physically filling in wrinkles and lines, Sculptra works gradually over time, building up collagen and improving skin quality from within.

Because Sculptra works by stimulating the body’s natural healing response, the results are gradual and long-lasting. Most patients see improvement in skin texture, firmness, and volume that can last up to two years. Sculptra is also safe and well-tolerated, with few side effects and little to no downtime.

How is the treatment performed?

Dr Barker will numb the area to be treated with a topical anaesthetic and inject a local anaesthetic where needed. The Sculptra® is also mixed with a local anaesthetic for added pain relief. The Sculptra® is then injected into the deeper layers of the facial skin, where collagen is formed naturally through a small, fine needle.

The Sculptra® works by filling a wrinkle with small PLLA beads. As the beads biodegrade the body then produces new collagen where Sculptra® was injected.

What can I expect after the treatment? Your face will have a few red spots or bleeding from the injection sites. *You may also have redness, some mild bruising and swelling. These resolve in a couple of hours to a few days max.
